Practices: Quick Reasons Why

Here are some quick reasons to write, read, and practice physical training and martial arts.

Writing 

  • To hone the ability to select words and construct phrases precisely and concisely
  • To organize thoughts and sort them in the appropriate order
  • To allow for the critical analysis of thoughts and ideas through the revision process
  • To facilitate a better articulation of ideas and beliefs in conversation with others
  • To help alleviate feelings of stress, anxiety and depression by working through problems on paper

Reading

  • To open the mind and gain perspective as to new ideas and methods of thinking 
  • To serve as the catalyst for concepts engaged in writing
  • To understand how the experiences of others relate to one’s own and of those whom you engage with

Physical Training

  •  To improve general health with regards to increasing strength levels, increasing cardiovascular capacity, reducing the risk of injury, and to act as a preventative measure against disease and illness
  • To develop the connection between mind and body by concentrating on the movements being performed

Martial Arts

  • To cultivate a presence of mind by sensing one’s own the mental and bodily state as well as their opponent’s, and by feeling each movement being made as it happens
  • To develop one’s ability to navigate stressful situations
  • To come to know and increase one’s threshold for pain
  • To instil a feeling of confidence and self-assurance in one’s ability to defend oneself and those around them
