Reflections – Man and His Symbols

“To bring the individuation process into reality, one must surrender consciously to the power of the unconscious, instead of thinking in terms of what one should do, or of what is generally thought right, or of what usually happens. One must simply listen, in order to learn what the inner totality – the Self – wants one to do here and now in a particular situation.”

– Man and His Symbols, C. G Jung

  1. Listen to the voice within. Let it guide you along the path you’re meant to take.
  1. If you aren’t living the kind of life you’d like, and you’re already doing many good things, perhaps there is something within you that you need to let go of.
  1. Release your hubristic ambitions and desires, and be willing to submit yourself to the trials that would symbolize the death and rebirth of your character.
  1. The development of personality cannot be approached in a competitive manner. Rather, the task is to submit to a power far greater than oneself. It is a task that cannot be rushed or forced, but must unfold over time as the individual accumulates wisdom through experience.
  1. Feel where the path of growth is attempting to take you – whether you should move more to the left or right.

“When the ego feels hampered in its will or desires, it usually projects the obstruction onto something external.”

  1. The unconscious will reveal bitter truths of your insufficiencies that must be accepted for internal growth to occur. Internal growth will present itself in the progress made externally.
  1. Discern projections as reflections of areas you’ve made steady growth or must continue to grow based on your emotional response to such experiences; a great degree of honesty is required in such assessment.
  1. Are you experiencing resistance because you are on the threshold of a breakthrough, or because you’ve been walking along a path counter to your conscience’s guidance?
  1. Suffering may act as a signal rather than simply an obstacle, pointing you towards where transformation is needed.

“When it comes to such difficult ethical problems, no one can truly judge the deeds of others. Each man has to look at his own problem and try to determine what is right for himself.”

  1. There will be decisions you are called upon to make where there is no clear ‘right’ answer.
  1. Live your life unafraid to take risks. Dare to try. Throw yourself in the arena. You might get battered down, but unlike so many others, you can at the very least say you’ve tried.
  1. Dare to dream. Dare to act.

“Every transformation demands as its precondition “the ending of a world.””

  1. A letting go to allow what’s highest to blossom forth.
  1. What was once meaningless can become the most purposeful adventure.
  1. The world is full of creative opportunities for the person who opens themselves up to the messages of the unconscious.
  1. The unconscious will often work counterintuitively to conscious desires.
  1. Know that lack of understanding does not mean irrelevance or lack of meaning. There is much beyond conscious recognition, happening below the surface, within.
  1. Faith in the face of the unknown. Faith in new beginnings.

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.”
